The 10th Annual Bed Race to benefit Family Promise of Gwinnett County will be April 27, 2019, in downtown Lawrenceville. We’ll have more details here as the event draws near. In the meantime, there are highlights of the 2018 event.
The 2018 Bed Race featured close races, two mechanical problems, and four eye-opening areas staged as places where families without shelter might spend the night in Gwinnett County.
Teams raced a bed on wheels in two heats for 220 years, including two turns and an up-hill section. Each team was required to have a person who weighed at least 100 pounds riding on the bed during the race.
The adult team with the best time was ViaSat which had a combined time of 60.3 seconds for both heats. WIKA USA won second place for speed, but their performance on a final round was hampered by a wheel problem.
The TCF Heroes won first place in the youth division. The second place contender, the team Siesta Fiesta, also had a mechanical problem but carried their bed to the finish line.
The Pigs in a Blanket team representing Lawrenceville First United Methodist Church won first place for fund-raising with no close competition. The Westminster Clergy team, with an “Amazing Grace” themed bed, won the People’s Choice award. The Bat Mo-Bed from Mountain Park United Methodist Church was close second for the People’s Choice award.
The group “Not My Roof” staged places where a homeless person might sleep in a tent, in a car, and an extended stay hotel. Beds used in the Family Promise programs were also displayed.
